DEBUCHER C'EST CA "CEDRIC" D.O.B. 28.8.95

Debucher C'est Ca gained his second CC at Blackpool under judge Geof Place and his title at South Wales Kennel Association under judge Jean Lanning. He was to date, the only confirmed champion in the breed in the UK that year. The first Debucher champion following on from a long line of champions bred at Clipperdown Cottage from the Jomil and Dehra breeding. I am very excited about new puppies Debucher Mioche and Debucher Mange Tout who have just made their debut. Their litter sister is the first bitch in New Zealand and won best baby puppy at the nationals over 140 other puppies.

Stud and puppy enquiries welcome to the discerning.

Tango des Echos de Buzet a Debucher

Soletrader Samba chez Debucher

Debucher Passepartout

In 2004 I brought Tango des Echos de Buzet in from France., I bought him from Gilbert Pene of the famous Rives de la Garonne kennel as a young dog the previous year and fetched him at the Nationale d’Elevage. He has proved a great stud dog and two of his youngsters Debucher Passepartout (d.o.b. 22nd September) and Soletrader Samba chez Debucher (d.o.b 10th October ) are pictured here. The dam of "Partout" is Debucher Quelquefois (Edition Limite du Greffier du Roi - Dehra Eminence at Clunebrae) and "Samba’s" mother is a Quelquefois daughter by Debucher Savoir Faire, Debucher Hermione. They are both of excellent type, size and have super temperaments. We look forward to bringing these two youngsters out in 2005.

Petits 2005

During the year I did exhibit a couple of youngsters namely Debucher Passe Partout and Soletrader Samba avec Debucher (photo) who won several best puppy awards. In June on my return from Three Counties Championship Show I discovered that thieves had entered the property via the woods and taken 6 of my hounds. The story of how we managed to get them all back is here for all to read entitled "Finding Libby" to help anyone who has to experience the same horror.

Click HERE to read the complete story - visit also: www.dogtheftaction.com

I am happy to say that Libby and Tango produced a litter in August of 3 healthy pups and thankfully she and the other hounds soon recovered completely and it was as if nothing untoward had ever happened!

Petits 2006

pbgv puppy Debucher Voila Enfin

I did not show my Petits a great deal in 2006. We did win BP at the Open Show in March with Debucher Raison d’Etre.Tango des Echos de Buzet a Debucher - Debucher Zinnia) Under judge Helen Bamforth and she then won Res BPIS behind Debucher Yorrick my GBGV puppy!

In September of this year we had Petit puppies and I am proud to say 4 of them should appear in the ring in 2007. Two bitches out of Debucher Indiscretion to Ch Soletrader Donald Duck, Debucher Ysolde and Debucher Yasmine will hopefully be campaigned in the UK and Ireland... Here at home Debucher Voila Enfin (Ch Debucher C’est Ca - Debucher Une Fois Encore) will enter the show scene in April. In co ownership with my grand daughter Amelia, Debucher Why Not (Tango des Echos de Buzet a Debucher - Debucher Zinnia) will also be campaigned.

We would also like to welcome "Toto" Tidou de la Font Francaise who joined our kennel in October. Bred in France he had lived with Jolanda Huisman for a while producing some excellent litters and arrived here to hopefully bring in fresh lines to Debucher.

2008 has been a quiet year on the Petit Basset front here at Clipperdown.

In June I repeated a mating between Tidou de la Font Francaise de Debucher - Soletrader Samba avec Debucher and a male, Debucher Executif (Zeki) will enter the ring early in 2009. Linda Magee in Ireland who has campaigned Ir. Ch Debucher Quelqu’un d’Autre avec Clonallan to Top Scent Hound in Eire this year had a litter to Debucher Ysolde at Clonallan. I flew to Belfast and visited them and picked a bitch from the litter.

A sister has gone to Holland to join Elvira Wempe’s Murphy’s Pride PBGV kennel along with Debucher Jacobin who went over in January.
Debucher Clonallen Breeze will be joining Zeki in the ring in Spring next year

From time to time I am lucky enough to find people who are happy to take on my dogs when they retire, or in some cases the males go to live in a home where I still may have access to them for the occasional stud work. In 2010 I was able to re home both my little French PBGVs. One was Tango des Echos du Buzet a Debucher at 8 years old who came into the UK at nearly two and proved a very useful addition to my PBGV lines. I have his daughters and grand children to carry on his breeding. He went to live with a lovely lady who has had Basset Hounds from me in the past and now, with one remaining male who needed a friend , she took on Tango, who has proved a great success. He loves running on the beach with his new pal.

"Went to Newquay a couple of weeks ago to visit my Mum and let Tango off the lead for the first time, I have attached some pictures, he loves to run free but unfortunately his recall is terrible and only comes back when he's ready but does come back."

The second male of the same age Tidou de la Font Francaise de Debucher came to the UK bringing in yet more interesting French PBGV lines and his progeny are proving themselves in the ring with one Champion and others with Ccs. An enchanting dog of superb type he went to live with Joan Duncan who had one of his grand daughters. Her Tibetan Terrier had died and her PBGV was really lonely. Once more this has proved a great success.

Tidou de La Font Francaise de Debucher "Toto" where he loves to be in his new home!

"Toto is settling in well and throughly enjoying his walks and free exercise in the field, where he uses his hunting voice at full volume! The two dogs are enjoying each others company and are very friendly with each other.
I am enjoying having him here as he is such a lovely little sweetheart and a joy to own."

Best wishes Joan.

STOP PRESS - STOP PRESS

As most of you will be aware since the discovery of POAG within PBGVs a lot of work has gone into ensuring that DNA from affected dogs and their siblings / offspring has been submitted to the Animal Health Trust.

Through years of hard work, hundreds of eye tests and the submission of DNA the BGV Club are very pleased to confirm that Dr Cathryn Mellersh at the Animal Health Trust has identified and carried out validation experiments on the the mutation responsible for POAG in the Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen.

The Animal Health Trust is now commencing work to develop a DNA test, based on this mutation which will be available in early 2015. Further communication on the next steps for PBGV owners will be available in due course. Cathryn Mellersh and the Health Sub-Committee of The BGV Club would like to thank everyone who has played their part in this success story, particularly the owners who have submitted eye tests and sent in DNA to contribute towards this research and of course, Prof.

Peter Bedford and Mrs Vivien Phillips who have been at the forefront of things since 1996.

DNA test for glaucoma to be launched at Crufts

press for complete story

Delighted to report that DNA results are back from 10 of my PBGVs tested for POAG.
Results have been forwarded to the Kennel Club.

Clear:

Debucher Golderak.
Debucher Executif
Debucher Zybelle
Debucher Indiscretion
Fae-Lemon de Chez Chanou Debucher
Debucher Kreme Fraiche
Tidou de la Font Francaise a Debucher
Dutch Ch Debucher Hamlet

Carriers:

Tango des Echos de Buzet de Debucher
Debucher Clonallan Breeze

At the National d’Elevage in Aillant sur Tholon, we spent a wonderful weekend with friends from many countries.
I was so honoured and touched to be awarded a Medal d’Honneur at the dinner after the show by the Club du Griffon Vendeen,
for my work towards the research carried out by the AHT to find the DNA mutation for POAG in the PBGV

Update:

PRIMARY OPEN ANGLE GLAUCOMA Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen 333 304 32

This is the most up to date figure from the Animal Health Trust as of 15th July 2015 . Listed are Carriers.. Clears and Affected.the numbers add up close to our predictions, though 333 carriers is just about 50% which is better than we hoped.

Since March this year when the DNA testing swab kits were first handed out to PBGV owners at Crufts, I am very happy that this high uptake figure has exceeded mine and the AHT expectations, and there are of course more in the pipeline.

I have urged all PBGV breeders to ensure that they not only test their current breeding stock but also those either retired and/or pet homed, or indeed any PBGVs who have produced progeny in the last 8 years. By so doing, we can then ascertain if carrier was bred to carrier, which of course in many situations was the case. Nobody was to blame, as the breeders were eye testing but unable to ascertain whether or not their PBGV was a carrier.

This is why the discovery of the DNA mutation by Cathryn Mellersh and her wonderful team at the AHT, (specially the brilliant Oliver), was so so important for the future of the breed.

I have been asked so many questions from all over the world since we started testing , and sadly in some instances it was too late to help a dog who had gone blind and in some cases had eyes removed. But in other cases, where owners and breeders seemed unaware of the problem it flagged up the need to start the DNA tests. I have also been asked how to deal with affected PBGVs. My suggestion is that these dogs undergo a six monthly eye examination and particularly to check pressures and should these begin to increase then the early use of Latanoprost eye drops can help to increase the length of time the dog has eye sight for several years. This can be purchased on line with a prescription from your vet, a much cheaper way of doing it.

In the case of two carrier parents, we must ensure that all progeny from these dogs are tested as soon as possible. If the carriers ( not affected) and hereditary clear are in a pet home, just a quick note to the owners to put their minds at rest is a kind gesture.

Gonioscopy from age 4 months, though not essential, is very relevant as a one off test as it will inform us whether or not the dog has a closed or open angle. In the case of a closed angle, which is quite rare in the PBGV, there is a small chance of developing another form of Glaucoma the onset of which can be sadly very sudden. We are, however, dealing with POAG in this instance and over the past 19 years there have sadly been cases which, were misdiagnosed as Lens Luxation. The AHT and Prof Peter Bedford both suggest a second Gonioscopy examination at about the age of 8 where the angle sometimes close up. But after the DNA swab tests, the annual eye examinations for most PBGVs is not necessary.

I would suggest every breeding PBGV undergoes an eye examination prior to breeding in case there is another eye problem. The other comments have been to only breed Clear to clear. This is unadvisable according to scientifice resarch as if you discard all the carriers you could end up with a very small gene pool which , in turn could instigate another health problem. Any one who has a query please feel free to contact me either by telephone 01442 851225 or email vphillips@btinternet.com or facebook. Vivien Hepner Phillips..

DR CATHRYN MELLERSH I am delighted to report that I suggested to the BGV Club that we nominate Dr. Cathryn Mellersh for the International Canine Health Award and in June we learnt that she had won jointly with Prof Sheila Crispin for all their work in research in the Canine world. The BGV Club nominated Cathryn along with the Miniature Dachshund Club and we are all delighted for both of them . So well deserved. Cathryn will now hopefully be able to continue research with added funds to help in the search for DNA for Epilepsy and I have also instigated research into Steroid Resonsive Meningitis. For this disease we have already sent several swab kits to the AHT from affected and also related dogs to those affected.

I would like anyone who has experienced this with their BGV to contact me and I can arrange for the test swab kits to be sent to them, obviously there is no charge for this. If, as a breeder you are aware of any puppies being affected in the past, please contact them and ask them to take part in this research. Once more, any questions on this can be forwarded to me and I will do my utmost to help
